Nigeria’s under-five mortality rate drops 17%, neonatal deaths rise – Official

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the Federal Government reported a 17 per cent decline in Nigeria's under-five mortality rate between 2018 and 2024, while neonatal mortality rose. The Sun Nigeria reported that Health Minister Prof Muhammad Ali Pate disclosed the increase in neonatal deaths despite the fall in under-five deaths and called for stronger preventive healthcare. Premium Times, citing a survey, said under-five mortality fell from 132 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 110 in 2024. The Tribune headline puts the newborn death rise at 5 per cent, but the excerpt provided is cut off before giving that figure, so the size of the neonatal increase cannot be confirmed from the supplied text. The story is marked as developing. Summary from 3 sources

Sources differ: The Nigerian Tribune headline gives a 5% rise in newborn deaths, but the excerpts from The Sun and Premium Times do not state a neonatal figure.
